Facebook Applies for an AR Hat Patent

Augmented Reality (AR) has always been an important part of innovation in Facebook. After changing its AR/VR team’s name into Reality Labs, the platform has rolled out significant AR features. These include AR video calls, multi-participant live streaming, Smartwatch, and video cropping. Today, Facebook applies for an AR hat patent.

Facebook AR hat example

Founders Legal, a corporate and intellectual property firm, spotted Facebook’s AR hat patent. As a variant of AR glasses, Facebook is now developing an AR hat. The AR display will be incorporated on the brim of the hat to minimize contact with its user. Because the hat’s brim is bigger, the expanded surface area will allow more functions like digital sensors, face tracking tools, and microphones, etc. Like AR glasses, an AR hat will let the wearer capture images and videos in real-world views.

Facebook applies for an AR hat patent on 22 June 2021.

Implications for Marketers:

Facebook’s AR hat is a real shift into wearable AR devices. For marketers, this is something to watch out for. AR hats can facilitate more advanced experiences in augmented reality. As such, they can also introduce a revolutionary marketing strategy.
