Facebook Tests Multi-Peer API for AR Video Calls

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly changed the world. It has changed the way people connect, learn, shop, and work. As such, Facebook tries to find ways to strengthen the feeling of presence and togetherness through its apps. The platform found new opportunities through augmented reality (AR). Today, Facebook tests Multi-peer API for AR video calls.

Multi-peer API for AR video calls is currently under beta testing on Facebook and will soon be available on Instagram Direct and Portal. The beta test is open for applications to all creators and developers with a basic knowledge of Spark AR Studio and JavaScript. Multi-peer API allows sharing of AR effects in a video call to several participants at a single time.

With Multi-peer API, users can enjoy shared context, shared games, and shared moments. Video calls commonly have breaks and pauses where people feel the need to do or say something. AR effects can feel those gaps through the Multi-peer API. During group play, lightweight AR games can make a team feel more together. While AR effects can add more emotions and fun to moments of celebrations.

Facebook tests Multi-peer API for AR video calls as of 02 June 2021.

Implications for Marketers:

Facebook’s Multi-peer API can facilitate new opportunities for marketers to enhance customer connections. They can use these types of video calls to answer FAQs, boost brand celebrations, educate the audience about their products, guide customers with a process, and a lot more. These tools are worth considering to enhance branding and outreach.
