WhatsApp Will Push Through Updating Its Privacy Policy

In the last quarter of 2020, Apple announced a major update on its iOS software. Apple iOS 14 will feature an Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA). Such a code will need to ask a user’s permission for data tracking. Most social media platforms aired their disappointment over the said update. So, Apple put it to a halt. This 15 May 2021, Apple will push through with the launch of iOS 14.5. WhatsApp will also push through updating its privacy policy on the said date.

In an attempt to lessen the impact of iOS users opting out of data tracking, WhatsApp enabled privacy policy prompts last January. Just like Apple, WhatsApp was challenged with many complaints. So, the platform also decided to re-schedule its privacy update this May. Today, WhatsApp users will again receive alerts regarding the privacy policy update. The prompt now highlights some limitations on the usage of WhatsApp in case a user opt-out of data tracking. These include:

  • Inability to access a chat list
  • Inability to receive incoming calls or notifications
  • Stoppage of WhatsApp Calls and Messages

Such limitations will take effect randomly among WhatsApp users.

WhatsApp will push through updating its privacy policy by 15 May 2021.

Implications for Marketers:

WhatsApp will push through updating its privacy policy to accommodate Facebook’s eCommerce messaging plans. With a softer approach, WhatsApp users are assured that the update will not affect personal chats. The update only concerns business apps like Facebook ads. For marketers, this can be a bigger consideration to WhatsApp marketing. Brands should keep an eye on the results of the update by the 15th of May.
