Instagram is Now Live Testing Map Search

Local searches are surging online nowadays. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in people searching for local businesses nearby. That is why brands and businesses need to update their profiles on Google searches and maps. Most social media networks also enabled location tools. In the last quarter of 2020, Instagram enabled Stories’ maps that allow searching of location stickers. Snapchat introduced “My Places” on snap maps to boost the discovery of local shops. Today, Instagram is now live testing map search.

Instagram Map Search

Instagram’s live test for map search is initially available in Australia and New Zealand. Map search allows users to find directions to locate tagged businesses. To use map search, users simply need to tap the map icon in the “Explore” tab right next to the search bar. It will also display relevant hashtags like #cafe, #restaurant, #takeaway, etc. Tapping on a specific location shows more details about the business such as hours of operations, location markers, and price information.

Instagram is now live testing map search on 14 September 2021.

Implications for Marketers:

Instagram’s map search is a new way to foster connections between businesses and Instagram users. It can also boost the discovery of local brands and businesses. With detailed information about the business, such a feature can also boost revenue and sales.
