WhatsApp Enables Data Portability

One of the biggest problems a request among WhatsApp users is the ability to save chat histories. The multi-messaging platform has enabled archive options, disappearing photos and videos, and multi-device logins. But these are not enough to meet the demand to download data on the platform. Today, WhatsApp enables data portability. It is the long-awaited solution to download data from WhatsApp chats.

WhatsApp’s data portability is somewhat a challenge because of the platform’s end-to-end encryption. But with the help of Samsung Galaxy Unpacked, WhatsApp was able to introduce data portability. Initially, Samsung Android 10 users can now download their WhatsApp chat history. These include transferring photos and voice messages to the device folder. Within the coming weeks, other Android and iOS users will be allowed to use the data portability feature.

WhatsApp enables data portability as of 11 August 2021.

Implications for Marketers:

WhatsApp’s data portability is an expanded push from Facebook’s family of apps. For marketers, such a feature makes it easier to manage ads and campaigns in WhatsApp and repurposed them to another channel.
