It seems that Twitter is hurrying up to repackage the platform before 2020 ends. After launching Fleets on 09 June 2020 and acquiring the Squad app on 11 December 2020, Twitter is shutting down Periscope by March 2021.

Twitter launched Periscope on 26 March 2015. It’s a live video app that Twitter uses for live broadcasts on the platform. For Twitter users, it’s a visual pulse of real-time happenings. In an official letter that Periscope published on Medium, they have noted the plans to shut down the app by March 2021. As such, starting the app’s latest update, no one will be able to create a new account. Twitter users can still go on live broadcasts but won’t have a space to save them. The broadcast will only be live on the tweet. There are also plans to integrate Twitter live broadcasts on Fleets.

Twitter announces that it is shutting down Periscope next year on 15 December 2020.

Implications for Marketers:

As Twitter shuts down Periscope, marketers are excited to see the Squad app working on Fleets. It points out a new opportunity to ramp out Fleets where users can screen-share their stories and save them in an archived folder. Screen-sharing Fleets increase discovery and engagement. As such, marketers should learn and prepare using Fleets in their ads and campaign.
