Digital marketing careers are built on more than knowing the latest platform. Employers need people who can connect customer behaviour, creative work, data and commercial decisions.

ToggleWhat informed this roadmap
At the Cyberport Virtual Career Fair 2021, Social Stand founder Dr Bernie Wong shared experience from building a digital marketing career and agency. The durable lesson is that employability comes from demonstrated judgement and learning ability.
Four capabilities that compound
Business and customer thinking
Understand the objective, audience, value proposition and journey before recommending a channel.
Making and experimentation
Create campaigns, content, landing pages or analyses and show how feedback improved the work.
Data interpretation
Move beyond reporting numbers. Explain what changed, why it may have changed and what the team should do next.
Collaboration and communication
Write clear briefs, present recommendations, receive feedback and work across creative, media, sales and technology roles.
A portfolio employers can evaluate
For each project, show the problem, audience evidence, options considered, work produced, result and reflection. A small case with honest reasoning is stronger than a large gallery without context.
A 90-day development plan
- Choose one specialist skill to deepen.
- Complete one real or simulated business case each month.
- Request critique from a practitioner.
- Publish a short reflection explaining decisions and learning.

Do candidates need to know every platform?
No. Strong fundamentals and evidence of learning transfer are more durable than shallow familiarity with every tool.
What should a beginner portfolio include?
