The new conversation setting on Twitter allows users to choose who’ll be able to reply on a Tweet. These three options are:

  • Everyone
  • Only people you follow
  • Only people you mention

The default setting is that everyone can reply is the one who tweets didn’t choose an option. The latter two settings grayed out the reply icon for users not included as followers or mentions. But they can still like the post or retweet it.

This conversation settings update on Twitter takes effect on 20 May 2020 for Android, iOS, and twitter.com.

Implications for Marketers:

The ability to filter Twitter replies provides more meaningful conversations. It empowers users to choose who they want to connect with different topics and concerns. For marketers, filtering unwanted public discussions is important, as it may affect a brand’s reputation. Such an update can also be an opportunity to organize exclusive forums. Share exclusive content to your loyal followers. It will also encourage others to interact more with the hope to get a similar invite.
