“You can Tweet a Tweet. But now you can Tweet your voice!” This is Twitter’s announcement today. The platform adds an option to tweet via audio clips.
Since 08 September 2018, Twitter has been experimenting with audio-only broadcasting. Together with Periscope, they provided an option to indirectly share audio on a tweet. Last 20 May 2020, Owen Williams, a member of Twitter’s design team, shared Twitter’s “Here and Now” audio tweets. It’s a teaser on how audio tweets may look like.
Today’s update lets Twitter users add an audio clip on their tweets. By taping the wavelength icon below the tweet composer, one can add a 140-second voice recording. A new voice tweet automatically starts once the limit ends. Thus, it creates a thread. Once saved, the audio tweet appears as a recording bar at the center of a profile photo. Please note that users can’t reply to an audio tweet.
Twitter audio clips will be available to iOS users on June 18, 2020, and will be rolling out to other platforms in the coming weeks.
Implications for Marketers:
Twitter’s audio clip option is an interesting addition to the platform. But there’s still uncertainty if the Twitter nation will use it. For marketers, this is a unique way of trying a different engagement. A teaser audio clip can get the audience excited with a product launch. It can also help brands get their messages across the platform during holidays or events. To go the extra mile, a thank you message can provide a deeper connection between a brand and its loyal followers.
